CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Anytime Fitness is opening a gym in South Charleston's Riverwalk Plaza, said Doug Harper, owner of the fitness club franchise.
The gym will open at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28.
South Charleston Mayor Frank Mullens will be on hand for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. that same day, said Bob Anderson, the city's business recruiter. Refreshments will be served.
The gym will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Also, "when you join one, you've joined them all - your key fob works at any Anytime Fitness location," Harper said. The company has more than 1,650 locations.
Harper said the Riverwalk Plaza gym contains cardio and strength equipment and tanning equipment.
"The location is great for commuters," he said. "We're just a hop off the Interstate (I-64) and we have bathrooms and showers."
Most Anytime Fitness visits are for 45 minutes to an hour, Harper said.
Harper is managing the gym. He said prospective members will be given equipment orientations.
"We're starting with four employees, and we're trying to hire a couple of personal trainers," he said.
Anytime Fitness is at 34 Riverwalk Plaza, between We Care Hair and Catherine's. The gym occupies storefronts previously occupied by Rent-A-Center and Hoover.
After Hoover closed all of its stores in the United States in 2009, one of the employees, David Meabon, opened his own vacuum cleaner sales and service business in another Riverwalk Plaza storefront. Meabon's store remains in business.
