A new Mingo County airport will hold its grand opening ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday.
The Mingo County Air Transportation Park is at Oldfield Branch, near Varney, on U.S. 52, which is known as Mystery Mountain Road.
The airport is on 975 acres of previously mined land that was donated to the county in 2008 by Alpha Natural Resources. According to the Mingo County Airport Authority, a total of $9 million has been invested in the site to date. The airport boasts a 5,000-foot runway, wind instrumentation, lighting and perimeter fencing.
U.S. Rep. Nick Joe Rahall is scheduled to present the keynote address. Representatives of Sen. Joe Manchin and Sen. Jay Rockefeller also are scheduled to speak.
