United Bank will close branch office in Smithers
United Bank, which previously announced it would close its office in South Charleston's Spring Hill neighborhood on Friday, plans to close four more offices, including the branch in Smithers, said Julie Gurtis, president of United's Charleston region.
The Smithers branch is on U.S. 60, just 1.6 miles from United's branch in Montgomery.
Also slated to close: A branch at 511 14th St. in Kenova. In Ohio, branches inside Kroger stores at Bellaire and St. Clairsville will close.
Gurtis said in a prepared statement, "From time to time all successful businesses have to look at how they are performing with regard to the physical location(s) where they conduct business.
"Companies such as United Bank, that have gained market share not only through natural growth, but also through several acquisitions, especially find it a necessary step to take in order to eliminate overlap," she said. "In 2012 United took on this tasking.
"We carefully studied a combination of factors that included growth of deposits, and proximity to other branches and other institutions. Our decision was to close five offices that did not offer a full complement of banking services."
Gurtis pointed out that United has a full-service office a short distance from each branch that will close.
"A large majority of the employees from these branches will continue to work for United in various other local offices," she said.
