CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Huntington Tri-State Airport has received a Commercial Airport Project of the Year Award for its runway rehabilitation project.
The airport received the award in the airfield project category during the Southeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executive's annual conference in last week in Lexington, Ky.
During a 54-hour period, crews resurfaced the airport's 7,016 feet long, 150 feet wide runway. Three paving teams worked simultaneously side by side, laying just over 22,300 tons of asphalt during the weekend closure.
Additional construction work around the runway occurred throughout the year over 120, 6-hour night closures.
In addition to the airport executives' association recognition, the project has also been recognized by the National Asphalt Pavement Association with a Quality in Construction Award for Excellence in Asphalt Pavements.
