Speedway plans to build bigger store at MacCorkle Avenue location

By From staff reports

Speedway officials plan to demolish their store along MacCorkle Avenue in South Charleston and build a bigger one, Mayor Frank Mullens told city economic development authority officials Tuesday.

The company purchased a small lot owned by the University of Charleston adjacent to the existing site to accommodate the expanded store.

He said the new location would offer additional services, including food, designed to compete with the Sheetz convenience store chain.

Sheetz already has opened three stores in Putnam County, with a fourth under construction. The company has also been looking at several sites in Kanawha County for potential stores.

Mullens said Speedway officials plan to demolish and rebuild their MacCorkle Avenue store within 90 days. Work is expected to begin in the coming weeks.

While the new store won't be a new business in the city, Mullens said he nonetheless welcomes the development.

"I think when businesses are reinvesting here, that's just as important as the ones coming in that are new," Mullens said.
