Western and Southern bounces back after fire
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Western and Southern Life Insurance office in Elkview is inviting the community to a free open house celebration June 28 to mark the company's recovery from a February fire that destroyed its original offices.
A Feb. 8 fire gutted the company's offices at 4931 Elk River Road South. The fire started in an apartment on the second floor of the office building.
"We lost everything except the confidential files for our clients, which were in a waterproof fireproof cabinet," said agent Randy Young. "But everything else was a total loss."
Young said the building had to be rebuilt from the ground up. Workers began moving into the new building April 11.
Now company officials want to host a community open house to thank the first responders who fought the fire and let the public see the new building.
The open house will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Free hot dogs and refreshments will be served, and organizers are planning activities and games for kids.
Young said the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department would hand out free fingerprinting and child ID kits.
