CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Kroger presented Mountaineer Food Bank officials with a $32,000 check Tuesday as part of a company-wide fundraising effort to assist hunger relief efforts.
The funds were from the grocery chain's "Bringing Hope to the Table" campaign, which raised $3 million this year to support food banks and charitable relief programs in local Kroger communities.
The $32,000 donation to the Mountaineer Food Bank was the largest of the $118,000 distributed to food banks in the company's Mid-Atlantic region, which includes Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia and portions of Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee.
Mountaineer Food Bank Executive Director Carla Nardella said the donation would help fund operating expenses.
"This donation from Kroger, its employees and customers helps to make our mission of alleviating hunger in West Virginia a reality for the thousands of people we serve in 48 counties in our state," Nardella said.
Kroger also made a separate donation to the Huntington Area Food Bank. The company currently operates 36 grocery stores across West Virginia.
