Kelley's Mens Shop, a longtime family-owned staple on Charleston's West Side, plans to open a second store along Bridge Road later this month.
Kelley's On Bridge, as it will be known, will open Aug. 28 at the former location of Gigi's at 1006 Bridge Road in South Hills, Kelley's vice president Kristi Walker said Monday.
The new 2,000-square-foot store will be a boutique version of the company's downtown store, which will celebrate its 79th anniversary Oct. 1.
Walker, who lives in South Hills, said she has wanted to open a satellite store in the area for years.
"We've watched the Bridge Road shops grow and it's become quite a nice little shopping destination," she said. "But the one thing we've heard from customers and friends is that there's no men's clothing up there. It's all mostly women's clothing and restaurants."
About two weeks ago, Walker found out the owners of children's clothing store Gigi's had decided to move downtown, freeing up the Bridge Road storefront.
Walker called up the building's owner, Realtor Jay Goldman, and said she would like to lease the location.
"We decided we would take a shot," Walker said. "The opportunity presented itself and we decided we would take it."
She and her husband, Brent, spent the last two weeks painting and sprucing up the storefront. They plan to start hanging signs and moving in inventory over the next two weeks.
Walker said she plans to use some of the extra equipment and materials at the West Side store at the Bridge Road location.
"Since we've been in business for so long, we have plenty of fixtures and signage," she said, "so we'll just bring that up here (to Bridge Road)."
Kelley's On Bridge will also have a more casual feel than the existing store, Walker said. She said the Bridge Road location would focus more on casual sportswear than the West Side store.
The Bridge Road store will feature designer jeans from 34 Heritage and sportswear from designer Robert Graham, who offers custom hand embroidery as part of his product line. Walker said those brands are not currently featured at the West Side store.
