Chesapeake Energy Corp.'s sale of a 32.5 percent stake in its Marcellus Shale assets in Appalachia to Norwegian oil company Statoil-Hydro for $3.4 billion is expected to close by the end of the year.
Chesapeake is the largest producer of natural gas in the United States. The company doesn't have any offshore or overseas presence. But Aubrey McClendon, Chesapeake's chief executive officer, hinted that might change.
In the prepared statement announcing the deal, McClendon said, "We believe this transaction creates substantial value for both companies and unique opportunities for international growth with one of the leading international oil and gas companies. Jointly we can export our world-class unconventional natural gas technology for further long-term growth."

James Songer II, president of Songer Insurance Agency, Beckley, has resigned from City Holding Co.'s Board of Directors.
In a Sept. 25 filing with the federal Securities and Exchange Commission, City Holding - the corporate parent of City National Bank and City Insurance Professionals - said City Insurance Professionals has become more active in the Beckley market in the past year pursuing insurance clients, "and it became apparent that there was a potential for a conflict" between Songer's insurance company and City's insurance unit. "As a result, after careful consideration, Director Songer tendered his resignation," City said.

Laquita Harris was the spokeswoman for Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia until mid-summer, when she moved to Tupelo, Miss., and became a stay-at-home mom.
In a Nov. 5 letter to family and friends, Harris said she plans to go to Zambia in April on a mission trip with seven other Christians. "While there, I will care for children two and under at the orphanage and teach Bible classes to a group of young women at the Namwianga Mission," she wrote. "Not only am I looking to be a source of encouragement to those in Zambia, I'm hoping this trip will be a life-changing experience for me as well."
Harris said she will pay the $2,500 cost of the 10-day trip. She said any money she collects will be used to purchase supplies and other needed items "that will directly benefit the children of the Namwianga Mission. Any unused supplies or monies will be left with the missionaries for the care of the children."
