Antonio Pompa-Baldi's parents at first thought his interest in piano was just the passing fancy of a toddler.
"My parents and I were watching television and they were surfing and all of a sudden on Italian National TV there was a piano concerto. I was mesmerized, apparently," the Italian-born musician said.
"I watched the whole thing from the beginning to the end, maybe 30 minutes. And I asked for more and I cried when it was over."
Pompa-Baldi said he asked his parents for a piano and when he persisted, they bought him a toy model. He recalls picking out tunes and actually playing some melody lines.
By the time he was 4, his non-musical parents figured their son really was interested in playing and they sought an instructor.
