The West Virginia Symphony's move from the Municipal Auditorium to the Clay Center in 2003 created a bit of a scheduling issue.
Conductor Grant Cooper quickly turned it into an opportunity.
The symphony, accustomed to performing on Saturday nights in the cavernous Municipal Auditorium, now performed Friday and Saturday at the smaller Clay Center.
That meant the symphony's musicians were in town longer, arriving by Thursday for rehearsal instead of Saturday morning.
"It made sense to do something in that time slot," Cooper said.
Meantime, Cooper had experience developing concerts for the younger set, and he enjoyed it.
And so The Family Discovery Series was born.
