CHARLESTON, W.Va. - A lifetime of theatrical training is all well and good until you have to don a headpiece contraption that weighs 7 pounds.
Perry Sook, a college student who plays the title role in "Shrek the Musical," said he had to be a fast study.
"It's a vocally demanding role, especially because they really don't have a class in how to sing with a load of green prosthetics on your face," Sook said.
When his run with the touring production of the musical is finished, Sook will return to the University of Oklahoma to complete his senior year. He's studying musical theater.
He said the university has a flexible program that caters to each student, allowing for time off to pursue theater projects.
Sook was delighted to get the lead role in the show, which offers a twist on the usual prince/princess theme. Shrek is an ogre who meets a beautiful princess and rescues her from the unwelcome pursuits of Lord Farquaad. In the end, Shrek doesn't become a handsome prince; instead, the lovely Fiona becomes an ogress.
