The Irish Spring Festival will be in full swing today in Lewis County's own Ireland.
The festival runs today through March 20 with most festivities scheduled at the Community Building. The Shamrock CEOs Club is sponsoring a themed contest for the event, which is in its 32nd year. This year's theme is The Blarney Rock!
Those wishing to enter will create a unique representation of the theme. Entries are judged in two categories: Crafty Creations and Edible Creations. Those entering the edible category are asked to bring enough for festival goers to taste and judge. Judging will be by popular vote.
The Blarney Rock, located above the Community Building, is a popular destination during the Irish Spring Festival. This year's Ascent to Blarney Rock will begin at 6:30 a.m. March 20, and hikers are expected to finish the hike to the "magically" suspended rock in time for the 7:02 a.m. vernal equinox and declaration of the beginning of spring. Hikers often leave a shiny penny at the base of the rock for good luck. It is believed that the Blarney Rock has a legendary effect on human aging.
Other activities include an Irish jig, King and Queen Coronation, scavenger hunt, kite flying, Lucky Charm Pitch, hunting dog demonstration, harp workshop, bicycle tour, harp concert, foul shooting contest, road bowling, duck race, talent contest, Bingo, a 10K walk/run, hayride and pet show.
