Bill Engvall gets along great with his current sidekick, though their shticks are different.
Engvall is the guy with the untucked dress shirt who lopes through a funny story.
Larry the Cable Guy - Daniel Whitney is his real name - plays the redneck with the cutoff sleeves and rapid-fire delivery.
"It makes a really good show," said Engvall, who is currently touring with Larry the Cable Guy in a show that makes a stop at Huntington's Big Sandy Superstore Arena Friday night.
Engvall contends he's not smart enough for the fast joke. His comedy is more everyday.
"Like the other day I was walking through the hardware store and I saw snail and slug bait. And I thought, 'Are they that elusive?' My first thought was, 'Wouldn't the heel of a boot do the same thing?'"
Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy are buddies going back a while - they also were part of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour with Ron White and Jeff Foxworthy - and he said they still crack each other up, on and off stage.
This brand of comedy is PG-13 at most, and Engvall said that's by design.
"We're not Disney on Ice. But as I try to tell young comedians, you've got to give your audience more credit. You can say, 'My wife and I were getting a little romantic the other night,' and the audience gets it. They know exactly what you're talking about.
"The key to your subject matter is you don't have to cuss."
