Kanawha Players will be taking a look at the life of John Frederick Matheus, a Harlem Renaissance writer and a professor at West Virginia State for 35 years.
Professor Carol Taylor-Johnson will be the guide for the program beginning at 7 p.m. today at the Kanawha Players Theater, 309 Beauregard St.
Matheus wrote poetry, plays and short stories during the Harlem Renaissance - a period emphasizing the importance of African-American arts and literature in the 1920s. He also wrote for newspapers in Charleston and Cleveland.
His short story "Fog" won first place in the "Opportunity" magazine short story contest.
