A program on events leading to West Virginia's establishment as a state will be held at the West Virginia Culture Center at 7 p.m. today.
Author Bob O'Connor, who just published "Countdown to West Virginia Statehood," will offer a view of the historical grievances that led to the state's creation. He reveals that while most people think West Virginia became a state due to opposition to Virginia's secession from the Union in 1861, western Virginians had been discriminated against since 1776 by their eastern brethren.
O'Connor is a noted Civil War author who has published eight books and been named a finalist four times in National Book Award competitions.
The event is free and open to the public and will take place at the West Virginia Independence Hall.
