CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Charleston Stage Company has announced the current season will be its last.
The theater company has operated nearly two decades with resources of West Virginia State University until recent financial decisions by the university's administration.
"With a sudden and steep cut in resources, facilities, and leadership, the Charleston Stage Company soldiered on toward an unknown future," a press release from the Stage Company said. "CSC continued to premier exciting theater experiences - utilizing the very best in local talent - though lack of funds began to diminish elements of production. Previously subsidized expenses fell into the lap of CSC."
"Unfortunately, as audiences and support steadily decreased, it became clear that the continual operation of Charleston Stage Company was no longer feasible."
Efforts to raise money and seek sponsors were unsuccessful, the release said.
"It is hoped that CSC will be remembered as a thoughtful, engaging and unique theater company that shined a light on numerous cultural and social issues," the release said.
The board of directors has scheduled its final meeting 6 p.m. July 2 at Good News Mountaineer Garage on Hale Street.
