Gallery owner finds creative solution to relocation
John Casto was looking for a tenant for two buildings he owns on Hale Street. His wife, Lisa Fischer Casto, was looking for new space to locate her business, The Art Store. Together, they are renovating the spaces, which eventually will include upper floor living space, part of which they intend to occupy.
Lisa, a former construction project manager, said one of the great finds in the first level of the larger building was a mosaic tile floor that lay under a layer of carpeting and asbestos tile.
Lisa Fischer Casto and John Casto review blueprints for the buildings. Though structurally sound, the buildings require updates such as new heating, cooling and electrical systems and an elevator.
The 1910 building at 233 Hale St. that most recently housed Merrill Photo originally was built for West Virginia Heating & Plumbing Co., founded by John Casto's great-grandfather. This early photo was taken before the building that now houses Galperin Jewelers was constructed.
