"It will be a really interesting show," Jones said. "Her father was a pioneer in crossing over to the Latin charts and market and she very vividly remembers going to Mexico and how very influential that was to her. Now she is charting on the Latin charts with her new album that was just released in June. So that's really cool and she has never played our market."
While Cole is officially the kickoff of the season's series, there are actually three events in September.
Known for reeling in a string of hot comedians among the college set such as Margaret Cho, Daniel Tosh, Jim Gaffigan and Mike Birbiglia, the Artists Series will have a special event on Sept. 18, as it teams up with the MU Office of Student Involvement to bring in comedian Bill Burr at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18.
Tickets are $25 general admission through Ticketmaster or the Artists Series at 304-696-6656.
"He is like Daniel Tosh was when we brought him in," Jones said "He is about to explode. When you Google him you can tell he is about to break. He's in the new buddy comedy 'The Heat' with Sandra Bullock and Mellissa McCarthy and he has a reoccurring role on 'Breaking Bad.' "
While the Artists Series starts out the season with a blast of comedy, the refreshing shot of a wine cork isn't far behind.
The Marshall Artists Series' almost famous, and often sold-out, food and wine fundraiser "Uncorked" is set for 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 at 21 at The Frederick. Premium tasting is at 4 p.m. For more info, call 304-696-3326.
"People really love it and it raises a lot of money which we need and it sort of fills a niche in the community and wine is involved so it is all good," Jones said with a laugh.
This year, Uncorked will have a stand-alone kick-off event "An Evening in Argentina," at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at the 21 at the Frederick. Cost is $100 per person (very limited seating) for this South American-themed night of food, music and wine. Call 304-529-0222.
Thanks to faithful patron, local physician and Latin music fan Oscar Ballester, both "An Evening in Argentina" and "Uncorked" will feature music from the world-renowned group the Trio Mielgo from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
