CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The path to becoming a clever and thoughtful songwriter comes from a lifetime of listening to music and avid reading.
Being funny and acerbic? That had its inspirations, too.
"Mad Magazine made me that way," Robbie Fulks said. "It's the worst possible influence for an 8-year-old."
Fulks is a prolific songwriter whose music has included folk and bluegrass, Americana and more. He's done performances that pay homage to the late George Jones and he's done covers of Michael Jackson and Cher. He's written and co-written music in Nashville, some of which he didn't find particularly palatable. He's been an office temp, a paralegal and a proofreader.
In short, Fulks did what he had to do to support his family. It doesn't mean he always liked it.
He recalls the exact moment when he realized country music was taking a direction he didn't like. He was working in Nashville as a songwriter.
