Mark Lowry has always had the gift of gab and a knack for making people laugh.
In middle school, it made him a class favorite... with fellow students.
"What's funny to a sixth-grader isn't always funny to an adult," he noted, adding his hyperactivity and problems paying attention didn't help his cause, either.
Fortunately, Lowry was blessed with a caring family and mentors who channeled his energy wisely.
Lowry said his mother figured out early on that music could be an outlet for her son. He recalls her playing the piano while he lay on the floor, propped his feet up on the piano bench and sang.
"I had a teacher who would take me on walks because I was so hyperactive," he said. "She changed my life. My mother says she was the first person who ever told me God liked me. She said, 'He must sure like you to give you all that energy.'
The comment was a revelation to Lowry, who understood even then the difference between loving someone - of course, God loved him - and liking someone.
