CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Boone County mother was killed and her son was severely injured in a single vehicle crash south of Madison.
Melanie Ann Shirkey, 38, of Danville was driving north Monday evening on W.Va. 17 just south of Madison in a Cadillac Escalade when her tires dropped off the edge of the road, causing her to lose control, according to a press release from the Boone Sheriff's office.
The vehicle crossed the southbound lane and went over an embankment toward the Spruce Fork River. Deputies said the SUV rolled and came to rest on its top near the water's edge.
Melanie Shirkey was pronounced dead at the scene.
Spruce River volunteer firefighters were able to pull Shirkey's 10-year-old son, Nathan, from the vehicle. He was taken by Boone County Ambulance to a landing site where a waiting HealthNet helicopter took him to Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital.
He remained at General Tuesday evening. Hospital operators said he was under evaluation.
Deputies still are investigating the crash. W.Va. 17 was closed for about 2 1/2 hours while emergency crews worked at the scene.
