State Treasurer John Perdue honored 15 West Virginia schoolchildren at the Culture Center in Charleston Tuesday for winning regional awards in the When I grow Up contest. Each student won a $500 SMART529 college savings account. One of the winners, Ahmed Amir, 8, of Raleigh County won an additional $4,500 in a random drawing. Each child's school also won $500 for support programs.

Serena White, 7, a student at Central Elementary School in St. Albans, a Smart 529 essay winner was presented with a $500 check from State Treasurer John Perdue at the West Virginia Culture Center. Her essay was one of 15 selected out of more than 3,200 entries from all over West Virginia. She wants to be an artist after she graduates from college.
