Skaters will dazzle crowd with moves on ice

It will be a flashy event on ice with music and constant movement as some of Charleston's best skaters present a free performance.

Charleston Figure Skating Club will have a Competitors Exhibition 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at South Charleston Memorial Ice Arena.

The skaters who are performing are preparing for regional and national competitions, or have previously skated in such events.

Sunday's event will allow skaters to practice before an audience while offering free entertainment for the community. Skaters will present jumps, lifts, spins and fancy footwork. Performances include freestyle, ice dancing and synchronized skating.

"It will be good for the kids and the community," said coach Vicky Robb.

Ice dancing pair Caroline Leadmon and Jacob Schedl have competed for the last two years in sectionals at the U.S. Figure Skating Junior Nationals. She is a freshman at Hurricane High School and he is a junior at George Washington High. They perform a discipline of figure skating called ice dance, which is similar to ballroom dancing. They are coached locally by Robb and also train at Pavillion Skating Club in Cleveland, Ohio.

Solo ice dancers will be Devan Tighe, a George Washington High freshman, and Marlo Weisberg, a Charleston Catholic High freshman. Robb is also their coach.

Madison Dean, a freshman at Nitro High, has competed for the last three years in national showcase events in Ohio, Massachusetts and California. She is coached by Mischa DiFlippo.

Performing juvenile ladies free skate will be Jocelyn Cabauatan, an eighth-grader at Logan Middle School, and Elena Compton, eighth-grader at South Charleston Middle. Intermediate ladies free skate performer will be Constance Gerstle, sophomore at George Washington. These three skaters will be in South Atlantic Regional Competition to be held Oct. 19 to 23 in Wake Forest, N.C.  Their coach is Heidi Sowards.

The synchronized skating team West Virginia Synchro will also perform. Synchronized skating is a team sport with skaters performing together as they concentrate on speed and intricate formations. West Virginia Synchro will host Mountain State Synchro Competition on Nov. 17 when teams from the Midwest and East Coast will compete.

Members of West Virginia Snychro and schools they attend include Devan Tighe, George Washington; Jocelyn Cabauatan, Logan Middle; Lexi Lipscomb, Capital High; Olivia Ford and Katie Legg, both of Bible Center School; Carly Smith, Andrew Jackson Middle; Jessie Foster, George Washington; Alyssa Hudson, Bridgeview Elementary; Emily Adkins, Horace Mann; Abby Howatt, Hurricane Middle; and Madison Dean, Nitro High. Assistant coach is Ciara Drummer and coach is Dianna Lenick.

While Sunday's event is free and open to the public, donations of canned goods and toiletries will be accepted for the Heart and Hand Community Outreach Center.
