Shelters open to residents without power

By From staff reports

Some Kanawha County emergency shelters are opening in the wake of the storm and power outages.

Shortly after noon today three shelters had announced plans to open with others around the county expected to follow suit, said Dale Petry, director of Kanawha County Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 6823 Sissonville Drive, opened the Multipurpose Community Center as a shelter.

Salvation Army on the corner of Roane Street and Tennessee Avenue on the West Side has also opened, he said.

Kanawha City Community Center was to open at 3 p.m. today, Petry said.

Elsewhere in West Virginia, shelters are located at the Old War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, the Bruceton Mills and Summersville fire departments, and at Jefferson and Martinsburg high schools.

Other shelters are open at the Kingwood Christian Fellowship, the American Red Cross' River Valley Chapter in Morgantown and at the Ranson Senior Center.
