Japanese steakhouse opens in East End
Local officials and Kwok cut the ribbon at Umami. From left are Ric Cavender, East End Main Street executive director, Ramon Navarro of Charleston, Charleston Mayor Danny Jones, Kwok, and Doreen Liu, a Charleston resident who is a server at the restaurant. Umami, a sushi restaurant and hibachi grill on the city's East End, held its grand opening Monday morning. The restaurant is in the old Trading Post pawnshop building on Washington Street East near the intersection with Bradford Street. Carina Kwok, owner of Main Kwong, is opening the establishment. She is also opening a new frozen yogurt bar next door to the Chinese restaurant. Kwok hopes to have the frozen yogurt bar opened sometime in January.
