Morgantown offers amnesty to street sign thieves

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The city of Morgantown understands if you like where you live, but officials say it's time to return those stolen street signs.

City officials are offering an amnesty program starting Monday. It runs through May 17, and anyone who returns a sign can do so without fear of fines or punishment.

Students at West Virginia University sometimes steal the signs as mementoes to their college careers, but the city says replacing them has gotten expensive.

Finals week at WVU also starts Monday.

The Streets & Signs Department has experimented with different kinds of signs to deter theft.

Officials have settled on a new, stronger pole, with street sign supports that are several inches thick - instead of a thin, metal sign that's often pliable enough to remove.
