Nitro High School social studies teacher Drew Wendt, rear, and Secretary of State Natalie Tennant celebrate with students Sam Neff, left, and Evan Eich, who were instrumental in encouraging every eligible senior at the school to register to vote. The accomplishment earned the school the Jennings Randolph award from the Secretary of State's office. A plaque is presented annually to schools that reach 100 percent registration of eligible seniors.
Wendt accepts the Jennings Randolph Award from Tennant. Randolph introduced a bill to lower the required age to register to vote eleven times. In 1971, the 26th amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed and changed the voting age to 18.
