Sesquicentennial, FestivALL to shut down numerous streets

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Drivers in Charleston will face numerous street closures the next two weeks as a result of the West Virginia Sesquicentennial and FestivALL.

Lt. Aaron James, special events coordinator with the Charleston Police Department, said that although Kanawha Boulevard will be closed frequently over the next week, drivers will have several options to cross downtown and the East End on Virginia, Quarrier, Lee and Washington streets.

"It shouldn't be a big deal," he said.

For planning purposes, though, below is a list of street closures, organized by day.

Wednesday, June 19

* California Avenue between Kanawha Boulevard and Washington Street; beginning at 6:30 p.m.

* Kanawha Boulevard East between Greenbrier Street and Michigan Avenue; beginning at 6:30 p.m.

* Kanawha Boulevard West between Pennsylvania and Ohio avenues; 5:30 p.m. to midnight.

Thursday, June 20

* California Avenue between Kanawha Boulevard and Washington Street; all day.

* Kanawha Boulevard East between Greenbrier Street and Michigan Avenue; all day.

Friday, June 21

* California Avenue between Kanawha Boulevard and Washington Street; all day.

* Kanawha Boulevard East between Greenbrier Street and Michigan Avenue; all day.

* Kanawha Boulevard East between Court and Capital streets; begins at 5:30 p.m., will remain closed overnight.

Saturday, June 22

* California Avenue between Kanawha Boulevard and Washington Street; all day.

* Farnsworth Drive rolling roadblocks between Piedmont Road and Spring Hill Cemetery; 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

* Kanawha Boulevard East between Greenbrier Street and Michigan Avenue; all day.

* Kanawha Boulevard East all lanes between Court Street and Michigan Avenue, eastbound lanes between Pennsylvania Avenue and Court Street; 7 a.m. to late afternoon.

* Matthews Avenue between Washington and Orchard streets; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Park Avenue between Washington and Orchard streets; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Piedmont Road rolling roadblocks between California Avenue and Farnsworth Drive; 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Sunday, June 23

* California Avenue between Kanawha Boulevard and Washington Street; all day.

* Kanawha Boulevard East between Greenbrier Street and Michigan Avenue; all day.

* Matthews Avenue between Washington and Orchard streets; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

* Park Avenue between Washington and Orchard streets; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Monday, June 24

* California Avenue between Kanawha Boulevard and Washington Street; ends at noon.

* Kanawha Boulevard East between Greenbrier Street and Michigan Avenue; ends at noon.

Wednesday, June 26

* Kanawha Boulevard West between Pennsylvania Avenue and Delaware Avenue; 6 p.m. to midnight.

Friday, June 28

* Kanawha Boulevard East between Court and Capital streets; 5:30 p.m., will remain closed overnight.

Saturday, June 29

* Kanawha Boulevard East all lanes between Court and Greenbrier streets, eastbound lanes closed from Greenbrier Street to Daniel Boone Park; reopens late afternoon.

Drivers should also be prepared for two additional street closures in the week following FestivALL. On July 2, the 1000 block of Bridge Road will be closed from 6 to 10 p.m. for Bridge Fest. Kanawha Boulevard from Capital Street to Court Street will close again on the evening of July 3 for the city's Independence Day celebrations.
