Capito raises nearly $770,000 during second leg of campaign

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., raised close to $770,000 during the second leg of her campaign for U.S. Senate.

That gives the six-term congresswoman more than $2.87 million on hand, campaign spokesman Chuck Flannery said.

Capito told the Washingtonbased political publication CQ Roll Call on Monday, "it's been a very successful quarter."

It's a little less successful than her last quarter, when she reported $921,000 in total contributions. At the time she had $2.37 million cash on hand.

Although it's early in the process, Capito appears to be the frontrunner both for her party nomination and the general election. Former state Delegate Pat McGeehan has announced he'll challenge Capito in the primary.

Capito is the only person to report fundraising for a Senate campaign, according to the Federal Elections Commission website.

In late 2012 Capito announced she would run for the Senate seat currently held by Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va. Rockefeller announced in January he would not seek re-election when his term expires in 2014.

Candidates for federal office are required to report fundraising totals by Monday.
