East End Main Street plans zombie run/walk event this fall

By From staff reports

Zombies will plague the streets of Charleston's historic East End this fall, in an effort to get residents running for a cause.

A part of East End Main Street's HallowEast 5, the Run Like Hell Zombie 5K Run/Walk is  set for at 7 p.m. Oct. 26. It's an after-dark road race that allows human contestants to choose to wear a belt containing a few "life flags."

At several intervals on the course, zombies participating in the 4th Annual East End Zombie Walk will chase humans in an attempt to take those "life flags," according to a news release from East End Main Street Director Ric Cavender. Contestants will race against the clock and run for their lives.

Human contestants are encouraged to dress in costume, "because running in costume with hundreds of other zombie apocalypse survivors is way more fun than running on a treadmill in your fancy sneakers and dry fit undies with a heart monitor," Cavender said in the release.

At the finish line, prizes will be awarded to the runner with the best time, the runner with the best time who kept the most life flags, the zombie who took the most life flags from human contestants, and more.

The Run Like Hell Zombie 5K Run/Walk runner's packet will include a collectible race T-shirt, among other things, and a special $10 "Survivor's ticket" to the HallowEast Costume Crawl, featuring live music, drink and food specials, and a costume contest at five East End restaurants and pubs.

The first annual HallowEast Run Like Hell Zombie 5K Run/Walk will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in honor of Lindsey Anne Strader.

Strader passed away in December 2012 at the age of 33 after a life-long battle with Cystic Fibrosis. She always wanted to give back to an organization that fights so hard for the advancement of care for those living with the disease.

HallowEast is scheduled for Oct. 23-26 and, for the second year, will be produced inpartnership with FestivALL Fall.

The full HallowEast 5 schedule will be officially released via the HallowEast website ( and the Official HallowEast Ghoulish Guide, on Sept. 6.

Pre-registration for the Run Like Hell Zombie 5K Run/Walk starts Friday and runs through Oct. 1, and is $25 per runner. Registration rates for after the Oct. 1 cutoff date, race sponsors, race route information, group registration rates, and much more will be available at starting at 9 a.m. on Friday.
