Politics and food will mix in Cross Lanes today, as Charleston Mayor Danny Jones will begin cooking up his famous barbecue ribs at the Mardi Gras Casino & Resort.
Jones' ribs have been a crowd favorite for years.
In the early 80's, Jones opened Danny's on Lee Street, and began selling his barbecue. He remained there for a decade until a fire put him out of business.
Jones moved to Nitro in 1990 and opened Danny's Rib House. He stayed there for four years until one of his employees was murdered.
In 1999, he started up dannysbarbecue.com, which he operated for several years.
All told, Jones has sold his barbecue in five restaurants. After today, he can add to that list.
Jones is taking today off as mayor and will spend the day with chefs at the casino's French Quarter restaurant. He will be showing the chefs how do prepare his barbecue ribs.
"I'm excited to have the opportunity to showcase my barbecue ribs," Jones said. "I asked several local restaurants if they would be interested in it and all of them, with exception to the Mardi Gras Casino, said no."
