Two empty buildings at the intersection of Elizabeth and Washington streets have been the target of redevelopment for the past few years. Buildings on the north side of Washington Street have already been redeveloped.
The New China building has been vacant for more than a decade. Negotiations between entrepreneurs and the building's owner have repeatedly failed.
The building at 1601 Washington St. E. is close to being purchased by the Charleston Urban Renewal Authority, which plans to renovate the building. The building itself has had several uses over the years, some of which resulted in violent episodes in the 1990s.
