Fitness program builds girls' confidence
Girls warm up for a training run with a lesson -- for the last 12 weeks they've discussed issues like self-esteem, bullying and friendship as they've built their stamina and confidence to run 3.1 miles. Runner volunteers worked with them each week, encouraging the girls as their fitness and self-confidence grew.
In their final session for Girls on the Run, third- through fifth-graders at Charleston's Chamberlain Elementary School write letters of thanks to someone that inspired them during their 12-week program. The girls will join other runners tonight for the Neon Nites 5K Run in Kanawha City.
Lead coach Rachel Wallace, at rear between the three girls who are standing, talks to the girls about their running program and what they've learned before Thursday's 5K practice session.
