CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Several area students have received nominations to U.S. military service academies.
The nominations were announced Friday by Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va. Rockefeller's nominations were the first stop in the highly competitive process toward receiving an official appointment to the academies.
* Air Force Academy -- Simon Sneeringer, Putnam County.
Sneeringer, a Winfield High School student and Scott Depot native, is a Boy Scouts senior patrol leader and is captain of the Generals' soccer team.
"Simon is a well rounded young man -- and entrepreneur -- who cares about others," Rockefeller said. "He has all the qualities I look for in students during the nomination process."
* Naval Academy -- Robert Henry Chris Kay II of Kanawha County and Nathan Tucker of Jackson County.
Kay, student at George Washington High School, carries a 4.755 GPA and is a member of the swim team.
"Chris is a top-notch student," Rockefeller said. "And he is highly committed to his future and his country."
Tucker, a Ripley High School student, has served as a page in the state Legislature. He carries a 3.8 GPA and plays varsity football and basketball.
