CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- On Monday, the Daily Mail published a story about a former photography studio on the East End of Charleston and the thousands of photos left behind.
Located at 1607 1/2 Washington St. E., Lindsay's Studio operated for several decades until it closed in 2000 when the owner, Lindsay Hignite, died.
Thousands of prints produced by the studio were left behind, and were discovered when the Charleston Urban Renewal Authority purchased the building as-is last fall -- a purchase that included the contents of the building.
But instead of disposing of the photos before beginning renovation work, CURA officials wanted to find homes for the images.
Staff at the Daily Mail asked the authority if the newspaper could take as many of the photos as possible to assist in identifying the subjects and return the images to the subjects or their families. Officials agreed to the request.
The Daily Mail has created an album on its Facebook page with 157 images so far. There are plans to add more photos.
We encourage anyone to identify those pictured.
Already, both images featured in Monday's story have been claimed by the families of those shown in the images.
One image, a collage of several family members, was claimed by members of the Hendricks family. The collage shows a couple, their four parents and the couple's 10 children, family members said.
The other image showed what appeared to be four generations of a family.
As it turned out, the photo indeed depicted four generations of the Trusley family: James F. Trusley, Sr., James F. Trusley, Jr., James F. Trusley III and James F. Trusley IV.
James F. Trusley III, who now lives in Florida and is retired from the Department of Veterans' Affairs, contacted the Daily Mail and said the image was taken in the summer of 1972.
He said his father and grandfather are deceased, and his son is the emergency, health and safety manager at Jim Beam in Kentucky.
