MADISON, W.Va. -- The Boone County school system was on a two-hour delay this morning because of bad weather.
The school system's written spelling bee has been postponed.
Other school systems -- including Hancock and Tyler -- were also being delayed.
The National Weather Service was predicting rain transitioning to snow this afternoon and tonight.
The National Weather Service office in Charleston issued a Winter Storm Warning from 7 a.m. today until 1 a.m. Saturday.
Meanwhile, power was out for thousands of people in the region Friday morning. At 7 a.m., Appalachian Power listed 1,000 Kanawha County customers without power, 563 Putnam customers without power,199 Clay customers and 142 Jackson customers.
Some community activities were being canceled. For example, the City of Dunbar canceled its parade that had been scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, stating a desire to keep community members safe.
