McCabe says he will run for governor
State senator says when there is an election he will be on the ballot

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS - Sen. Brooks McCabe announced that when there's an election for governor he will be a candidate. That's not so unusual in this political season. What was different was the way McCabe campaigned here.
Throughout the Business Summit, politicians rent rooms and hold receptions to try to attract supporters and contributions.
McCabe took a different approach. Between summit sessions he employed a stump-speech approach by commandeering a grand staircase just outside the resort's biggest hall.
As people wandered out of a Thursday morning business session, they couldn't miss seeing McCabe standing about 15 steps up the soaring staircase. He spoke without notes and without a microphone. In fact, his only prop was a "Brooks McCabe for State Senate" poster on an easel.
His tactic worked. He quickly drew a crowd of nearly 100 supporters and curious onlookers.
The Kanawha County Democrat recounted some of his accomplishments as a legislator. He vowed to always "do what's right."
He told the business leaders, "I'm asking to be your point and person."
McCabe said it is time for members of the business community to step up, get out their checkbooks and support his campaign for state Senate now and, when there's a gubernatorial election, to support him then, too.
"When there is an election for governor, I will be a candidate," he declared. "I need your support."
"I will listen," he pledged. "I don't give up. "I will stand tall for you, even though I'm 5'8" and 130 pounds."
That comment drew laughter. He attracted applause as his presentation wrapped up. The performance was the talk of the summit Thursday afternoon.
The business summit, which has drawn more than 600 leaders from across the state, concludes today. It is sponsored by the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce.
