CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Three Nitro city workers were splashed with an unknown substance Monday morning while picking up trash.
Nitro Mayor Rusty Casto said the workers were collecting trash bags on 18th Street.
"They went to smash the garbage and whatever was in the bags blew up and got on them," Casto said.
Two of the workers were transported to a local hospital for decontamination showers. The other man refused treatment.
"One said his eyes was burning," Casto said.
The Kanawha Sheriff's Department drug unit is heading to the scene to determine the nature of the unknown substance, Casto said.
"Right now, we don't know," he said.
Casto said the workers were collecting trash from many houses, so it's not immediately clear which home put out the trash bag in question.
"We have a general idea it was on 18th street and we think we know the house, but we're going to check and make sure," he said.
