Globetrotting grandparents Bill and Pat Garner were in Ecuador when they learned their middle daughter, television and movie star Jennifer, had given birth to their latest grandchild.
Jennifer, who grew up in Charleston, gave birth on Monday to her third child with husband Ben Affleck.
The couple named their first son Samuel Garner Affleck, after Affleck's grandfather, Bill said.
"We're just tremendously excited about it. We weren't sure we were going to have any more grandkids," Bill said. "The baby's healthy, Jennifer's healthy, the family's all excited."
Bill is also excited the couple used "Garner" as the lad's middle name.
"It's the only chance we have of extending the family name," he said.
Bill and Pat Garner have three daughters. Melissa Wylie, their oldest, lives in Boston, and
Susanna Carpenter, their youngest child, lives in Charleston.
Melissa has two sons, Jack, 10, and Griffin, 7. Susanna has a daughter, Emma, 8, and a son, Alex, 5. Jennifer's daughters, Violet and Seraphina, are 6 and 3, respectively.
Bill and Pat left their Charleston home for Ecuador about three weeks ago and were adventuring around Cuenca when Samuel was born.
"When we got back, we got a call right away," Bill said. "We're pretty well-connected."
