CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Kanawha Valley Interfaith Council 62nd annual luncheon will be April 24 at John XXIII Pastoral Center, 100 Hodges Road off Corridor G in Charleston.
The luncheon is sponsored by the West Virginia Council of Catholic Women.
The theme will be "Understanding Our Neighbors: The Roman Catholic Faith."
Keynote speaker will be the Rev. John Finnell, pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church in South Charleston.
"He is very ecumenical," said Jane Ann Grishaber, vice president of the council and a Catholic representative.
Grishaber said getting to know those of other faiths leads to the realization that people are not all that different.
"We all worship the same God," she said. "You can be suspicious of people and dislike them if you don't know them. Once you get to know them, it's different."
Grishaber, a long time member of the council, said, "We have Jewish, Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Church Women United representing the protestant faith, Islam, Baha'i, and Hindu. We try to have a good representation."
She said the council started more than six decades ago and stemmed from a conversation two ladies, a Protestant and a Jewish woman, had over a backyard fence. The council has continued to grow as it promotes peace and understanding. The council also reaches out to the community through projects.
Citing a few examples, Grishaber said, "Three years ago we put on a program in schools teaching children about faith and love. We did a program for the blind at CAMC. We purchased a piano for the interfaith chapel at West Virginia State University."
Registration on April 24 is 9:30 a.m. followed by a morning program at 10 a.m. Lunch begins at noon and will be followed by Finnell's presentation. There will also be a question and answer session.
Tickets are $15 each and are available at PostNet at Ashton Place. To receive tickets by mail, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to PostNet, 1111 Fledderjohn Road, Charleston, W.Va. 25314. Deadline for purchasing tickets is April 19.
