Derailed train cars block homes in Cabin Creek

By From staff reports

According to Kanawha County's Metro 911 operation, 12 train cars hauling coal have derailed at 162 Joliet Road, up Cabin Creek near Dawes. The wheels to approximately 10 of those cars have come off the tracks. The cars have remained upright and the train is stopped.

The derailment is blocking four crossings: Dawes Hollow, Miami Hill, Sharon Hill and Joliet Road.

Several hundred homes are blocked off by the derailed cars, and will remain blocked as the effort to move them continues.

According to the Department of Transportation, Kanawha County students who live in the Cabin Creek area will be taken to Sharon Dawes Elementary and will stay there until their parents are able to pick them up.
