Nitro business owners will be required to register their fire alarm systems with city government and pay a fine if firefighters respond to more than four false alarms in a year.
Not all council members were on board with the proposal when it was first discussed. After some changes to the measure, council members were unanimous in their support Tuesday night.
Councilman-at-large Craig Matthews raised concerns with the initial proposal, which called for fines for two false alarms in a 12-month period. He also worried that some business owners would simply shut off their fire alarms rather than face a potential fine.
Matthews said Tuesday he was satisfied after the ordinance was amended to all four false alarms per year. Business owners also will not be penalized for false alarms that are the result of a prank.
The amount of the fine has not been determined.
Municipal Court fees will also increase from $10 to $25.
Council members held a public hearing on the increases. No one opposed the measure. It takes effect immediately.
Circuit Clerk Robin Smith said the hike was necessary to keep pace with increased operating costs.
Little League baseball fields will also see lighting upgrades, thanks to a $10,000 grant from the West Virginia Local Economic Development Assistance Program.
State Delegate Patrick Lane presented the award to city officials at the meeting.
Ivan Meadows, Little League president, and Mayor Dave Casebolt accepted the award on the league's behalf. Meadows said that Little League parent Jennifer Igo wrote the grant application about two years ago.
Casebolt said he "greatly appreciated" the grant money and said Lane "has really worked hard for the city of Nitro."
Council members also appointed Mike Zirkle to the Nitro Convention and Visitors Bureau board.
Zirkle, a retired lieutenant of the Meigs County, Ohio Sheriff's Department, has been a Nitro resident for more than 30 years.
"I have a keen interest in Nitro and have had for some time," Zirkle said.
He said he looked forward to the opportunity to serve.
