Charleston has suspended its free trash bag giveaway because the contractor has not yet delivered the bags to the city.
Crews will not be handing the bags out the rest of the day today or tomorrow, according to a press release from the city.
Maryland-based Calico Inc. had agreed to deliver 9,000 boxes of black garbage bags and 17,000 boxes of clear recycling and yard waste bags to the city for distribution this week, according to the release.
To date, only 2,600 of the black bags have arrived. The city depleted this reserve earlier in the week.
Refuse Department employees have been making arrangements with customers who received the trash bags to come in at a later date for the clear yard waste/recycling bags since those have not yet been delivered.
"Our Refuse Department has been working hard all week in adapting to these unforeseen problems with the shipments of the bags from our contractor," Public Works Director Gary Taylor said.
A schedule for make up days will be publicized once the bags finally arrive.
