CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Charleston Mayor Danny Jones found a package in his driveway at 8 a.m. Friday morning with a dead bird inside and a note addressed to him.
The package was wrapped in bright orange paper. Once Jones realized it contained a dead bird, he looked no further and contacted authorities.
He could not recall the contents of the note but said, "It was bizarre. It made no sense."
The mayor has no idea who would do such a disturbing thing.
Sgt. Bobby Eggleton, assistant chief of detectives for the Charleston Detective Bureau, said the dead bird was a pigeon that had been shot and had its eyes removed.
Police are awaiting lab results to see if prints or DNA can be recovered from the package.
Jones is concerned about the safety of his family.
"I care about my children, not myself," he said.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Charleston Police Department at 304-348-6480.
