She pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. At a previous hearing, McCormick testified that she was trying to cut her own wrists and that David was wounded when he tried to intervene.
He collapsed and died soon after leaving a local hospital against a doctor's advice.
It's not the first time McCormick has faced charges.
In 2007, she served 30 days in jail after hitting another victim in the head with a hammer during an argument. She also has drug and vehicle violations on her criminal record.
She apologized in court for David's death.
"She just keeps getting a slap on the wrist," Delores said. "I hope the next time the person doesn't end up like David did.
"Maybe the third time there will be more justice, or the tables will turn."
