A memorial ceremony was held Monday for seven firefighters killed in the fire at the F.W. Woolworth department store March 4, 1949.
The victims were George Alexander Coates, 28; James Paul "Jiggs" Little, 26; Richard Ellsworth McCormick, 34; Frank Norton Miller, 31; Emory Clyde Pauley, 51; Thomas Franklin Sharp, 50; and Fred Clarence Summers, 27.
They were killed after going into the building, when the first floor gave way. The firefighters plunged into the burning debris of the basement.
A wreath was placed at 205 Capitol St., the location of the fire, in their honor.
