CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The state Division of Highways has changed the lane closure schedule for the Dunbar Toll Bridge as employees inspect the span.
DOH officials have opted to close alternating lanes until 6 a.m. Friday and again from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Saturday, said Carrie Bly, spokeswoman.
Alternating lanes on the bridge will be closed 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Bly said.
Both bridge lanes will be closed 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday, she said.
The decision to alter the schedule came after officials discovered there was a higher-than-anticipated traffic volume on the bridge and they had received numerous complaints.
The increased traffic flow likely comes from the fact that the bridge is being used as a detour because of the closure of the Dick Henderson Memorial Bridge between Nitro and St. Albans, Bly said.
"We believe the complaints we've been getting will go down with the decision to have these nighttime closures," she said.
The total bridge closure will likely cause some residents concerns even though it will be during low traffic flow periods, Bly added. However, she said DOH employees will allow emergency vehicles to use the bridge during closure periods.
"We'll let them right through," she said.
"We appreciate people being patient with us," Bly said. "We know it's frustrating because it's a detour route, but we can't put this inspection off until November."
