CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Police are investigating a shootout in a housing complex on Charleston's West Side that left bullet holes in buildings.
No injuries were reported Monday evening in the Orchard Manor housing complex where the shooting occurred, Detective Jarl Taylor said. Patrol officers responded to Hutchinson Street just after 7 p.m. Monday after receiving multiple calls of shots being fired.
Multiple shell casings were found at the scene and at least two buildings were struck by gunshots, Taylor said. It appeared there were four shooters and that some in a vehicle on Copenhaver Drive and others standing on the hillside between the rows of townhouses, the detective said.
Officers found more than a dozen shell casings at the scene.
There were dozens of children outside playing at the time of the shooting.
"This does not need to be happening with children outside playing," Taylor said. "A child very easily could have been hit today."
He said the four so far have been identified by street-names only, but that detectives were working on getting real names. A motive has not yet been determined.
Some of the suspects were believed to have fled in a dark-colored sedan with white writing on the back window.
