Girls Night Out, the annual women-only fundraiser that benefits the YWCA Resolve Family Abuse Program, has a new venue and a major corporate sponsor, organizers announced.
Last year, about 900 women attended the event, which raised about $190,000, and chairwoman Suzette Raines said it outgrew its venue of the last decade, the former Sunrise Museum on Myrtle Road that now houses the law firm of Farmer, Cline and Campbell.
"With support staff, we had more than 1,000 people there," she said.
To accommodate its growing popularity, the Aug. 1 event will take place at a hangar at Yeager Airport with a theme "Come Fly With Me."
Volunteer committees are in full swing with plans that include music of Frank Sinatra. Attendees will be encouraged to dress in vintage styles with a particular eye to the 1940s.
Raines noted that while the event is fun and festive, its purpose is serious, raising money and awareness to eliminate domestic violence.
Tuesday evening, committee members also announced a new corporate sponsor.
Crestwood Midstream Partners, a Fort Worth, Texas-based company with offices in Charleston and Clarksburg, has committed $75,000 over three years, Raines said.
"It is the largest single donation we've ever received," she said.
Miranda Jones, Crestwood's vice president of environmental safety and regulations, said when the company, which works in the natural gas industry, came into West Virginia two years ago and began hiring local people for its offices, it actively sought ways to become involved in the community.
The YWCA was recommended as a cause because of its commitment to preventing domestic violence and Jones learned about the success of the Girls Night Out event.
"I presented it to our CEO and shared with him that I would like to do a long-term commitment of cash annually to sponsor the event and to find options for our employees to give back to the organization with commitments of time and resources," Jones said.
Tuesday night, she presented a $25,000 check to the Girls Night Out committee.
Tickets to Girls Night Out are $100 until July 24 and $125 after that and may be purchased at www.gnowv.com.
